Indigenous treaty rights are one of the most confusing issues for Canadians. This course will examine this subject from a legal, political and public view. The intention is to clarify as much as possible how these rights fit into Canada. The course will include historical and contemporary issues associated with treaties. Pre and post 1867 treaties and agreements in Canada will be examined.
Biography
L. James Dempsey is a member of the Blood tribe of southern Alberta (Treaty 7) and came to the University of Alberta in 1992 as Director of the School of Native Studies. His interests include Blackfoot history and culture, Plains history, warriors and warfare, treaties and land claims. Dr. Dempsey is currently an instructor at the University of Alberta in the Faculty of Native Studies.
