About Us

Lifelong learning is at the heart of who we are and what we do.

Our Mission

To offer older adults, high quality and affordable non-credit educational courses, seminars and workshops which stimulate both mind and body by exploring liberal arts, fine arts, sciences, humanities and physical activities.

Our Vision

To inspire as many individuals as possible to discover the joys of lifelong learning and education.

Our History

Prior to ELLA being formed, the Faculty of Extension offered a spring program, for more than 25 years, for mature adults. In 2001, that program was discontinued. Several active members got together and created a non-profit organization dedicated to lifelong learning. A Steering Committee was formed and in August 2001, eight members (Marilyn Chinnery, Beverly Brown, Carol Goretzky, Frances Klingle, Valerie Cload, Pat Shields, Marg Stephens and Mildred Jowsey) met to plan a new non-profit association for senior learning.

Edmonton Lifelong Learners Association was registered under the Societies Act of the Province of Alberta with 65 paid members. In 2002, ELLA applied for and received charitable status from the Canada Revenue Agency, Charitable Division.

By 2002, the Program included: art (painting, drawing, and history), physical activity, linguistics, classics, writing, history, music, current affairs, ethics, anthropology, literature, and aging concerns. Many of these popular courses continue today, with more than 1,000 members enjoying the benefits of lifelong learning. Our courses are taught by talented university professors who are experts in their material.
